And as the crowds die down, so too does the demand\u2014meaning employers need to ramp down just as quickly come the new year. Some employers may lose sight of that need for empathy when laying off workers who joined the organization on a temporary basis\u2014thinking that they should be prepared for the end of the work relationship anyway. However, if workers aren\u2019t properly informed throughout the process\u2014of when their end date could be, how discontinuation of benefits will happen, resources available\u2014it can sour the experience. Be transparent, honest and generous with details leading up to and during the layoff process.<\/p>\n

Employers that want to go the extra step to have a responsible layoff strategy may want to consider the unique needs of the employee population they\u2019re letting go. If these are workers for whom this position was a way to earn extra income, consider offering financial wellness tips or even connections to a training program on financial health.
